Celebrating Philippine Heritage
Buhay Pinoy
Exhibit

June 23rd - July 14th, 2007

The month of June is of great importance to the Filipinos. It was on June 12, 1898, in Kawit Cavite, Philippines, that General Emilio Aguinaldo declared Philippine independence from foreign sovereignty. On that day, the Philippine flag was unfurled and the Philippine National anthem was first played.

In celebration of Philippine Heritage Month, the city will be treated to a glimpse of Filipino culture with an exhibit at the Lynn House Gallery. The exhibit, entitled "Buhay Pinoy" translates to: "Buhay" for life and "Pinoy" is slang for Filipino. The display features native products used in Philippine daily life.

Artifacts include the "banig", a sleeping mat woven from palm leaves, to the "banga", an earthen pot used to keep water cool and the "sungkka", a stone game used for entertainment. The exhibit will showcase the simple way of life that molds the happy nature of the Filipino people.

The exhibit opens June 23rd in conjunction with Pistang Pinoy Celebration taking place in Waldie Plaza from 10 AM to  7 PM and continues through July 16th, during normal operating hours:  Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, noon - 5 PM.
